It isn't surprising, in our age of modern technology and abundant junk food, that teens are in worse shape than ever. But, there's still time to get them off the couch and into a fitness routine. And, with Podfitness, we can take that modern technology and use it for something better.

I know that as a teenager this is a ‘turning point’ in life where looking GREAT is equally as important as is feeling fabulous. Losing weight can be FUN, safe and a lifelong healthy lifestyle. And, teens are capable of achieving their goals, especially if provided with personal choice, knowledge and support from family, friends and professionals. I am one part of the equation that is now easily obtainable as most teens own their own iPODS, and parents can feel better that this program is much more affordable than having to hire a personal trainer on an hourly basis, giving them more options that they can feel good about.

With a staggering statistic of over 9 million children and teens considered overweight or obese I knew it was time to direct my energies towards Teen Fitness. Teens can and need to become healthier-not just physically but mentally. Teens need to be put on a sensible exercise program and nutrition plan that they can follow for the rest of their lives. By practicing good fitness habits now it will pay off for them throughout life. The medical community has been sounding the alarm: America's kids are in worse physical shape than they were 20 years ago. This is particularly disturbing since overweight teens often grow into overweight adults, and overweight adults develop more heart disease, diabetes, gout, and arthritis. The New England Journal of Medicine reported that obese teenagers in the top 25 percent of their weight categories have twice the death rate in their 70s as men and women who were thin as teens. Every time our teens sprawl in front of the TV, their metabolism slows to a crawl. Researchers at Memphis State University and the University of Tennessee explored the link several years ago and were startled to find that kids' metabolisms were lower while they were watching television than when they were resting and doing nothing at all! The typical teen now spends almost 30 hours a week in front of the tube, while eating high-fat snacks.

I can remember being a teenage boy in school and the unmerciful teasing of any boy or girl whose body didn't look "normal" -- the very skinny , fat , underdeveloped or overdeveloped got pointed out. Because yes, kids of all ages are tough on each other. It's time for us to help make a difference. Who's going to step in and encourage teens to change their lifestyle? That's right: It's up to us, as parents, and professionals to help them find ways of living a healthy lifestyle and by breaking this cycle we can create healthier, happier and more confident and productive adults.

My Sensible Teen Fitness Program - If you help them get strong, defined and better shaped their minds will shift from the fad diet mentality. Aerobics are not enough to do that (that burns bodyfat and conditions the cardiovascular system so they need to sculpt and shape!) My program consists of weight training that is fun and challenging as opposed to hard, boring, and sweaty. It should be kept basic(getting back to traditional exercise)and short(20-30 minutes) two to three times per week for a block of 6-8 weeks at a time(that is a long term goal). It is extremely important that the workouts are made efficient as teens have busy lives and if exercise is too time consuming they are likely to fail. In Teen Fitness there must also be a Master Plan in place that would incude setting goals, charting progress, keeping a journal, and visualizing success. Teens will stick with my fitness plan because they see themselves succeeding by reaching goals and overcoming obstacles and because with Podfitness my program is extremely convenient.
